Phone use while driving continues to be a problem

When it comes to driving safety, northeastern states such as New York have the worst overall scores compared to the rest of the nation. This is attributable to the prevalence of speeding and hard braking, according to driving safety app Everdrive. However, distracted driving from phone use is a bigger problem in the southern part of the U.S.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that distracted drivers were responsible for 3,477 deaths along with 391,000 injuries in 2015. To get a better handle on how pervasive phone distractions are to today's drivers, Everdrive gathered data from approximately 300,000 users. The states with the most phone distractions were as follows: Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia. Alternatively, the states with the least usage were as follows: Vermont, Oregon, Hawaii and Washington.

Fortunately, there are several possible solutions to combat unsafe driving caused by phone distractions. For example, the states with the lowest phone usage while driving have laws prohibiting drivers from fiddling with handheld devices. This indicates that laws meant to govern the road can have a positive effect. Another possible solution is to encourage the use of safety apps that disable notifications when the user is driving.

Regardless of how many solutions are proposed, however, some drivers are bound to have accidents due to phone distractions. Should an individual find themselves involved in such an accident, they could reach out to an experienced personal injury lawyer. If an accident was caused by negligence, the victim could file a claim for damages. A settlement could potentially cover medical expenses, lost wages and more.
