Winter driving safety tips

During the dog days of winter, millions of U.S. drivers face treacherous weather-related road conditions. According to the Federal Highway Administration, 22 percent of all traffic accidents are the result of poor weather. However, there are several safety measures New York motorists can take to minimize risks and avoid car accidents during the winter months.

Two of the top causes of winter-related crashes are ice and black ice, which can both make it difficult for a vehicle's tires to grip the road. Black ice tends to form at night or very early in the morning, so drivers should use extra caution during those times. Drivers should also slow down, increase their stopping distance and give themselves more time to reach destinations when rain, snow or sleet is present.

Car owners should winterize their vehicles to ensure that they are ready for inclement weather. This includes getting new windshield wipers, inspecting tires and checking to make sure a vehicle's brakes, heater, defroster, exhaust system and lights are all working properly. Car experts also recommend that drivers get oil changes and check batteries ahead of freezing temperatures. Finally, it is always a good idea to keep an emergency kit in every vehicle. The kit should be supplied with a flashlight, flares, windshield washer fluid, first-aid kit, de-icer, blanket, gloves, drinking water and nonperishable food.

Thousands of serious car accidents happen across the U.S. each winter. These accidents can cause severe injuries, including long-term back and neck ailments. In order to recover compensation for medical expenses and other damages, it may be necessary to file a personal injury claim. An injured victim may learn more about legal options by speaking to an attorney.
