Reasons for increased fatal accidents in New York

There was a significant increase in the number of traffic-related fatalities in between 2015 and 2016 according to estimates from both the National Safety Council and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Per the NSC, there was a 6 percent rise in the number of fatal car accidents between 2015 and 2016, and there was a 14 percent increase compared to 2014.

There are a number of potential reasons that have been suggested for this. One is that with gas prices being lower and the increasing health of the economy, people are driving more. However, the chief executive of the NSC stated that the increase in driving alone would not account for a 6 percent rise in fatal crashes.

Another reason for the increase is likely due to the number of people engaging in unsafe driving behaviors. The NSC completed a survey of motorists, and it found that 47 percent of people stated that they texted while driving. An additional 10 percent admitted to driving while intoxicated.

No matter what the cause of auto accidents, they are often very expensive. Even when crashes don't result in injuries, people will still have to have their vehicle repaired, and they will often also need to pay for a rental vehicle. When injuries do take place, medical bills can become expensive, and people may lose wages if they need to take time off of work to recover. Insurance companies will frequently attempt to get people to settle for the lowest amount possible, but this may not cover the victims' expenses. When the crash was caused by the negligence of another motorist, an attorney could help seek appropriate compensation.
