1 dead, 2 injured in crash after short police chase

New York authorities reported on Jan. 14 that a passenger in a vehicle that fled from the authorities following an early-morning traffic stop was killed. Authorities stated that the fleeing vehicle collided with a tree.

The authorities initiated the traffic stop at about 2:30 a.m. on Western Avenue near Lenox Avenue in Albany. As authorities approached the vehicle to talk to the driver, the vehicle sped away and headed west on Western Avenue. Before the authorities could catch up to the vehicle, it struck a tree.

A passenger who was sitting in the backseat died as a result of the injuries he suffered. He was identified as a 25-year-old Albany resident. The 23-year-old male driver and a front seat passenger both suffered injuries. They were treated by medical emergency crews at the scene before being transferred to a nearby hospital. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. The driver was ultimately charged with DWI. Authorities stated that additional charges against him were pending as he also had a parole warrant. Otherwise, authorities stated that they were still investigating the incident.

If a person suffers an injury after the driver of a vehicle in which he or she is a passenger crashes, that individual may still be eligible to seek compensation for his or her medical bills and other damages. A personal injury attorney may gather evidence that demonstrates that the driver was driving while intoxicated or unsafely when the accident took place. Often, a lawyer will negotiate that case with the driver's insurance. If the driver did not have insurance, the attorney may work with the injured person's insurance or seek compensation from the driver directly. This may be done either in or out of court.
