Snapchat speed filter and reckless driving behavior

Distracted driving can be deadly for New Yorkers. With the internet, social media and smartphones readily available, there are many additional distractions that are available in today's world. Among them, a filter used with Snapchat is raising particular concerns. The speed filter is thought to be highly distracting while also encouraging people to drive recklessly.

In Florida, a 22-year-old man who was using the speed filter on Snapchat reportedly accelerated up to 82 miles per hour. The Snapchat video then shows him accelerating even more, reaching a speed of 115 mph before he lost control of his vehicle. The man's car crossed over the median and struck a minivan head-on. The vehicles burst into flames, and the man, his 19-year-old passenger, a woman in the minivan and two of the woman's children were all killed. Three other people who were in the minivan were seriously injured.

Snapchat has a warning message telling users of the speed filter not to snap and drive. Safety experts do not believe that is sufficient, however. Some states have been reviewing ways to stop people from using Snapchat while driving, but nothing has been passed yet.

A negligent driver who causes an injury or fatality accident could be held liable to pay damages to the victims. Using smartphones, social media or other electronics while driving may endanger the lives of others on the road. People who are seriously injured in accidents that were caused by distracted and reckless drivers may want to consult with a personal injury attorney about how best to seek compensation for their losses.
