Safety week ahead for commercial truck drivers

Commercial truck drivers in New York and throughout the country will be the focus of Safe Driver Week that starts on Oct. 16. The Commercial Safety Vehicle Alliance partners with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and sponsors the week with support from law enforcement and industry.

Its aim is to promote safer driving practice by enforcing existing laws and educating drivers about those laws. Behaviors that are focused on during this week include distracted driving, seat belt compliance, obeying traffic control devices, improper lane change, speeding and traveling too closely among others.

The week is a particularly important one because drivers of passenger vehicles and commercial trucks are the main cause of crashes involving those vehicles. According to the "Large Truck Crash Causation Study" done by the FMCSA, driver behavior causes over 88 percent of large truck crashes and 93 percent of crashes involving passenger vehicles.

Semi-truck accidents can be particularly devastating for the people in other vehicles due to the size differential. Following an accident, the amount of compensation offered by the insurance company might be insufficient. A person could be facing weeks or months of rehabilitation and may be unable to work for that time or might never be able to return to work at their previous position. An attorney might be able to advise an injured person about the best strategies to take following an accident. For example, it may be advisable to file a civil lawsuit against the driver and the driver's employer and the insurance company. If there were mechanical problems, a manufacturer may be liable.
