Despite initial skepticism, blood test can help detect concussions

In a fall, there is a chance that you will hit your head on an object that is nearby or on the ground. That hit to the head could mean that you might suffer from a concussion. When it comes to head injuries like concussions, doctors are often left having to make an educated guess in order to make a diagnosis. This leaves some patients without a proper diagnosis, which means they don't get the medical treatment they need.

One of the primary reasons why diagnosing a concussion is difficult is because the symptoms of the condition might not appear right after the injury. In some cases, the symptoms can take days to present. That can leave an individual who has a concussion in danger since another hit to the head while the brain is still healing could be particularly damaging.

A new diagnostic tool, which was met with skepticism at first, has shown great promise. That diagnostic tool is a blood test that can detect glial fibrillary acidic protein, which is a type of protein that is released into the blood stream after an injury to the brain. In the study that was done, the blood test was shown to have accuracy range of 94 to 97 percent, which is a huge improvement over the unreliable methods used to diagnose concussions today.

If you were injured in a slip-and-fall accident and suffered a concussion, you will still have to rely on the old method of diagnosing concussions. This can often be unreliable and expensive. You might opt to seek compensation in New York to help you cover the costs of the diagnosis and care after the accident.
