What should I do if I'm bitten by a dog?

When you are bitten by a dog, there are a lot of things that you have to consider. Not only do you have to find out if the dog has been properly vaccinated from rabies, you also have to keep an eye on the wound for signs of infection. In all dog bite cases, it is a very good idea to seek out medical care for the wounds.

What types of wounds can occur in a dog bite?

Generally, dog bites will cause either superficial wounds or puncture wounds. Superficial wounds are often treated with a thorough cleaning, topical antibiotics, and bandages. Puncture wounds are a bit more difficult to treat. These wounds are likely to bleed more, but that is helpful as long as you don't lose too much blood. The bleeding helps to clean the puncture wound out. Applying direct pressure to the wound is suitable if you are bleeding severely or have been bleeding for at least 5 minutes. Generally, puncture wounds won't be bandaged.

Are there any risks associated with dog bites?

Dog bites can transmit bacteria and germs into the wound. This puts you at an increased risk of infection. This makes it imperative for you to clean and disinfect the wound. If you notice signs of infection, such as a yellowish drainage or a warm feeling around the bite, seek medical care right away.

If you were bitten by a pet dog, you might opt to seek compensation from the dog's owner. Learning about how dog bite cases are handled in New York can help you to decide what to do.
