You must report accidents that involve injuries right away

The stress of being in an automobile accident can sometimes lead to people forgetting about some basic points after the accident. One of the points that is very important to remember is that you must report the accident to the police department if there is any injury or death caused by the accident. This notification must occur immediately in those cases.

If the injury that occurred warrants a call for paramedics to come to the scene or if the medical examiner needs to come to the scene, a call to emergency services via 9-1-1 will usually get the medics, as well as a law enforcement official to the scene. In that case, the requirement to report an accident with a death or injury immediately is met.

If the accident seems to have only damaged property, a report must be filed within 10 days if the damage equals $1,001 or more. If the amount of damage is less than that, you and the other driver can simply exchange registration, insurance and license information with the other driver.

There are some instances in which an injury from an automobile accident isn't noticed right away. For that reason, it is a good idea to contact the police right away so a report can be filed if you have any reason to think that you might have been hurt and just don't feel the pain yet.

An accident report is often necessary if you plan to seek compensation. With that in mind, it is always best to have a report filed. You can then get a copy of the accident report so you have it available if you choose to seek compensation.
