Construction accident shows how small factors can turn serious

Going to work at a construction site comes with certain risks and dangers. Construction workers usually do everything they can to ensure that they remain safe. Their employers also have to take steps to ensure that the workers have what they need to work in a safe manner. A recent accident at a construction site in Midtown Manhattan shows just how fast an accident can occur at a construction site.

The accident happened when a construction worker was trying to move a massive hydraulic drill called a Casa Grande. Workers who saw the accident noted that the driver of the Casa Grande seemed to be trying to drive it over a sidewalk.

The driver may have lifted the boom of the massive equipment when he was trying to move the vehicle. The change in the boom's position might have changed the center of gravity. That caused the massive drill to flip backwards. It slammed into a New York Police Department van when it flipped. Luckily, the van was empty at the time.

The general contractor for the 38-story hotel project where the accident occurred has a history of issues with worker safety. In fact, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the company for four safety violations within the past few years. Only 2 years ago, the company had a $250,000 fine from OSHA because of a lack of fall protection for the employees.

All safety issues at construction sites should be taken seriously. Workers have to be properly trained and equipment has to be maintained. If a worker is injured because of safety issues or if a passerby is injured because of a construction accident, seeking compensation for their injuries might be something to consider.
