Controversy surrounding NY Scaffold Law rages on

As many New York residents are aware, the state has a law called the Scaffold Law which has drawn quite a bit of controversy over the years. But recently, it feels as though the controversies are far more prevalent. Both sides of the dispute are digging in, trying to prove their point and either trying to eliminate the law or prop it up.

So what is the Scaffold Law in the state of New York? The law holds a construction worker's employer liable for all costs when the construction worker suffers an accident. That sounds like a great thing, right? Well according to construction employers and their insurance companies, the Scaffold Law places a significant financial burden on them, causing costs to rise.

As you can imagine, they are campaigning to remove the law, or at least reduce its efficacy by quite a bit. They are staunchly opposed by construction workers and their unions.

What can't be disputed is the dangerous nature of the construction industry. There are always going to be unfortunate incidents -- many of them fatal -- because construction is inherently dangerous, no matter how many safety protocols or processes you throw at it.

Whether you are in favor of the Scaffold Law or against it, the fact that construction is dangerous can't be changed. It is a constant in this equation. So if you don't believe that construction employers are fully responsible for the costs of a construction accident victim, then who gains responsibility of that bill?
