The teen DUI problem is very real, according to study

If we were to ask you "how many teenagers or young adult drivers who get into fatal car accidents are under the influence of alcohol or marijuana," how would you reply? What figure would you come up with in your head? It's very likely that you would think that the number is dramatically low. You may think these events are relatively rare, even though they are persistent enough in society to be a major safety concern.

But in the end, this idea that such dangerous driving habits by younger drivers are uncommon is actually a myth in and of itself. A new study found an alarming number of teen drivers and younger drivers are getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle while they are under the influence of marijuana or alcohol.

Researchers for the study looked at fatal car accidents in which a teen driver or a younger driver was involved, and they only looked at wrecks that occurred in states with regular toxicology testing. What they found is that 50.3 percent of the teen drivers and young drivers involved in these fatal wrecks were under the influence of alcohol and/or marijuana.

More specifically, the study found that 36.8 percent of the teens were under the influence of just alcohol. Another 5.9 percent were under the influence of marijuana. And yet another 7.6 percent of the teens were under the influence of both alcohol and marijuana.

These figures portray an epidemic, and such dangerous driving habits by teen drivers and younger drivers pose a serious threat to public safety.
