People know texting while driving is dangerous -- and still do it

This may not necessarily surprise you, but a significant portion of people who know of the dangers of texting while driving admit that they have texted while driving at some point in their life. This is part of a new survey that aimed to get a better picture behind why people text and drive.

According to the survey, 98 percent of people who own a cellphone and "text regularly" were aware of the dangers of texting while driving. And yet 75 percent of these people admitted to texting while driving at some point. Granted, most people did the "safest" possible option: two-thirds said they read a text message while at a red light or stop sign.

But there were still a quarter of people who responded that, at some point, they sent a text while they were driving.

The cognitive dissonance here is amazing, but it is not unexpected. With the whole world at our fingertips now, people simply brush off the statistics and the potential dangers because "it's not gonna be me." That text they send won't result in a car accident because they are somehow special, or they have a surefire strategy that makes it okay for them to do it.

These are just excuses, obviously -- but some people may think of them as true. Texting while driving is dangerous. It doesn't matter what personal rules or codes you follow: if you pull out your cellphone while driving, you are inherently not as focused on the road as you could (or should) be.
