Distracted driving in New York is all too common

Statistics from AT&T's IT CAN WAIT Campaign reveal that people frequently engage in unsafe driving practices, and this is often due to motorists focusing on their cellphone instead of what's happening on the road in front of them. Along with findings that about seven in 10 drivers use their smartphone while on the road, data also indicates that about 10 percent of drivers use video chat while behind the wheel.

Social media use is another common reason for people's distraction behind the wheel. About a quarter of people use the Facebook app while driving, and around 14 percent of motorists stated that they used the Twitter app while driving. Around a fifth of those who were surveyed said that they were addicted to social media, which is why they access it while driving.

It appears that younger millennials between the ages of 19 and 24 are some of the worst offenders. Based on research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, about 88 percent of young millennials have at least one unsafe driving habit. Further, people from all age groups and in both studies saw nothing wrong with using their cellphone while on the road.

When motor vehicle accidents are caused by a distracted driver they can be very costly. People involved in a crash can expect to have to deal with car rental costs, vehicle repairs and, in some cases, a variety of medical bills. Insurance companies may not provide sufficient compensation. A lawyer could assist people who have been harmed in such an accident in seeking an appropriate payout through a personal injury lawsuit filed against the at-fault motorist.
