CVSA annual inspections set for June

The vehicles of New York commercial truck drivers will be subject to inspection for three days in early June as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's yearly International Roadcheck inspection blitz. Although cargo securement is part of the Level I inspections that will be conducted, the blitz will also put a particular focus on cargo to emphasize its importance to drivers.

A flyer created by the CVSA offers tips to drivers on cargo securement. It includes reminders to examine tie-downs for damage or wear and tear and to make sure that cargo and equipment are secure.

Most of the inspections will be North American Standard Level I, and these are the most thorough types of inspections. Cargo-related violations that drivers could be cited for include improperly secured tie-downs, damaged or insufficient tie-downs, or a failure to secure truck equipment or to prevent cargo from shifting or being lost.

Poorly-secured cargo, driver fatigue, an intoxicated driver, speeding and distracted driving may all result in a truck accident. Other drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists might suffer severe injuries in such an accident. If the compensation offer from insurance is too low, the injured person might want to file a lawsuit against the driver and the driver's company. Even if the truck driver is not facing criminal charges, a civil lawsuit might be successful because of the lower burden of proof that a plaintiff in a civil case has to surmount as opposed to the prosecution in a criminal trial. If the case is successful, the amount of the award might be larger than the original settlement offer.
