Commercial truck drivers' health and driving

New York motorists may want to know that results from a study from the University of Utah School of Medicine show that commercial truck drivers with three or more health issues have quadruple the crash risk of drivers in good health. Many truck drivers tend to encounter difficulty with remaining healthy due to poor sleeping and eating habits and having to be in a sitting position for extended periods of time. According to the lead author of the study, the results indicate that declining health increases crash risk.

For the study, the medical records of nearly 50,000 commercial truck drivers were examined. Thirty-four percent of the drivers showed signs of suffering from one or more health issues, such as diabetes, heart disease and low back pain, linked to bad driving. The researchers also examined the drivers' crash histories and discovered that drivers who had at least three of the flagged medical issues had an increased chance of having been in a crash.

For all of the drivers in the study, the crash rate involving injury was 29 per 100 million miles traveled. When only the drivers with at least three medical conditions were considered, the rate increased to 93 per 100 million miles traveled. Age, the amount of commercial truck driving experience and any other factors that may affect driving abilities were taken into account in the calculations of the crash rates.

Semi truck accidents can result in catastrophic injuries to occupants of other vehicles. Many such incidents are due to truck driver fatigue, and a person who has been harmed in such a collision may want to meet with a personal injury attorney to see how best seek appropriate compensation.
