The higher risk of death on Thanksgiving

Residents of New York may face an increased risk of death around Thanksgiving. While the holidays are a time for celebration for many Americans, they also come with elevated risks due to factors such as influenza and the weather. Thanksgiving poses an especially high risk for coronary events and car accidents, both of which are often preventable.

2 dangerous pharmaceutical recalls from recent history

New York medical patients go to their doctors hoping to find relief and cures for their ailments. The last thing they expect is to get sicker because of the treatments and medicines they receive. However, two recent FDA recalls show how it is not uncommon for dangerous chemicals disguised as treatments and cures to be lurking in our medicine cabinets.

Truckers and legalized marijuana

New York residents may be aware that recreational marijuana use is now legal in Maine and Massachusetts. On Nov. 8, voters in Nevada and California also voted to lift the legal restrictions on recreational marijuana use. In North Dakota, Arkansas and Florida, medicinal use of marijuana became legal after voting day.

Legal challenge cleared for driver screening program

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has been collecting information on truckers in the state of New York and across the country for years. A program to let employers screen their prospective employees by accessing the FMCSA's database met with a legal challenge based on privacy laws, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit affirmed a lower court's dismissal of the lawsuit and the Pre-employment Screening Program is free to proceed.

FMCSA electronic logging devices mandate upheld

A federal court of appeals has upheld a lower court ruling in favor of the mandate requiring truck drivers to track hours of service statuses with electronic time logging devices. The rule takes effect in December 2017, by which time most trucks in New York and across the country are required to have the devices on board.
