Dog bites are a premises liability problem in New York

Premises liability can mean a lot of things. If a person who has the right, or even the implied right -- like a postman delivering your mail -- to be on your property gets hurt, he or she may have the right to bring the owner of the property to civil court. If you have been bitten by a dog, you may have a case that can be heard before the court of New York.

Approximately 6,000 postal workers have been bitten by a dog in the past year. New York had three different areas that made the top 30 places of getting bitten by a dog if you are a postal worker.

The list, put out in anticipation of National Dog Bite Prevention Week.

It is reported that 4.5 million Americans, half of them being children, are bitten by dogs each year. That is a lot of pain.

If you have been bitten by an aggressive dog through no fault of your own, you may want to contact an attorney who can answer your questions. Doctor bills and missed work may be able to be recompensed.

Even if you are at the local dog park, you have the expectation of safety. You don't expect vicious dogs to be in the park because owners have the responsibility of socializing and monitoring their animals.

There are around 600,000 dogs in New York alone. That is a lot of K-9s! Two of the neighborhoods and one borough are in the top 30 of the list of places you are likely to be dog bitten in America. And these are only the bites that mail carriers suffer so you can imagine how many people are bitten every year.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene estimates that there are approximately 4,000 dog bites a year in New York.

Being informed about the process for holding the owner of a vicious animal responsible is civic-minded and is worth researching.
